5 Based on 44 Reviews

Gosaikunda is actually the largest of three main lakes. The other two being Saraswatikunda and Bhairabkunda. Hindu legend has it that the lakes were formed when the God Shiva plunged his trident (Trisul) into the ground in order to obtain water.

Gosainkunda, the scared lake, is located on the northern side of the capital city of Kathmandu in the Langtang National Park. Gosaikunda Trek offers a serene Himalayan scenery from west to east in all its totality.

Gosaikunda Trekking Overview

This classical Gosaikunda trek combines three major areas north of Kathmandu along the border of Tibet: Langtang, Gosainkunda, and Helambu. Langtang is a narrow valley that lies just south of the Tibetan border. It is sandwiched between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower range of snowy peaks to the south.

Gosaikunda trek offers an opportunity to explore villages, climb small peaks, and visit glaciers at a comfortably low elevation. You can trek to Langtang by returning to Kathmandu via the holy lakes of Gosainkunda at 4,300 m. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the lakes during the full moon festival in August. The lake is also sacred to Buddhists. Gosaikunda is the largest of the three main lakes.

The other two are Saraswatikunda and Bhairabkunda. Hindu legend has it that the lakes were formed when the God Shiva plunged his trident (Trisul) into the ground to obtain water. The Trisuli River has its source in the lakes, thus, the name.

Helambu Valley is very famous for its natural beauty and wonderful climate with superb views of magnificent snow-covered mountains. The area covers typical highland Sherpa villages along with beautiful rhododendron forests.

This 11-day Gosaikunda Trek begins from Kathmandu. After your arrival, you will drive to Dhunche the next day. Dhunche is the starting point of the Gosaikunda Trek. From there, we will be trekking through Thulo Syabru and Sing Gompa to get to the holy lake of Gosaikunda.

Continuing the trek, you cross Lauri Bina Pass (4,610 m) and trek to Ghopte. Lauri Bina Pass is the highest you reach in this trek. From Ghopte, you trek for three days to arrive at Chisapani. The next day, you trek to Sundarijal which takes about 5 hours. And the same day, you travel to Kathmandu which takes about 30 minutes.

This region extends from the north to Taramarang to the Gosaikunda Lake and the lower Jugal Himal from the north. The valley is approached from Trishuli River valley, north of Kathmandu.

Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

In the early morning, we embark on a bus ride from Kathmandu to Dhunche, which takes around five hours. The bus journey provides views of beautiful foothills and ridgeline landscapes as we head towards Dhunche, passing Trishuli Bazaar and catching glimpses of Ganesh Himal along the powerful Trishuli River. The drive is enjoyable, with terraced green hills and lush forests, although some parts of the road might be a bit bumpy or under construction.

Stay overnight in Dhunche.

The trek begins with a gentle descent and then a steep climb up to Thulo Syabru. Along the way, you might spot red pandas, monkeys, and different kinds of birds. Thulo Syabru is a charming village that offers breathtaking views of Ganesh Himal (7,110 m) and Langtang Himal (7,234 m), surrounded by splendid landscapes.

Stay overnight at a local teahouse in Thulo Syabru.

The trail from Thulo Syabru to Foprang Danda (3,200 m) involves a steep climb, passing through Dursagang (2,660 m) with views of Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. After Dursgang, the path ascends gently before becoming flat and leading to Sing Gompa. Here, you’ll find a well-maintained local cheese factory and a Buddhist Monastery. Sing Gompa offers panoramic views, beautiful nature, and a yak cheese factory known for producing the best cheese in Nepal.

Stay overnight at a local teahouse in Sing Gompa.

We begin the trail with a gradual climb up to Laurebinayak. The path becomes steeper as we make our way to Gosaikunda, offering breathtaking views of the Manaslu range, Ganesh Himal range, Tibetan peaks, and Langtang Lirung. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of the Annapurna range rising in the distance.

Passing through high pastures and huts at Laurebinayak, we cross a small ridge to behold the holy lake of Gosainkunda. The Gosaikunda trek boasts about 108 lakes, with Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Gosainkunda being the three most significant ones.

Legend has it that Lord Shiva created Gosainkunda by piercing a glacier with his trident to obtain water, quenching his thirst after swallowing poison that threatened to destroy the world.

Stay overnight at a local teahouse in Gosainkunda.

After spending time around the lake, we leave the Gosaikunda trek through rough terrain, passing four small lakes to reach the Laurebinayak Pass (4,610 m), the highest point of this trek. Don’t forget to look back and enjoy the spectacular views of Manaslu, the Ganesh Himal mountains, and the familiar Langtang Lirung. We then descend steeply to set up camp near Ghopte.

Stay overnight at a local teahouse in Ghopte.

The first part of the trail goes down a bit and then starts going up through the rhododendron forests until we reach Tharepati. After that, we descend to a lower altitude. Before reaching Tharepati, you might notice settlements of cattle herders (mostly huts and mud houses) at (3,579 m) as we cross a stream, passing through rhododendron, oak, and juniper forests.

From Tharepati, the trail gradually goes down through pine and rhododendron forests, offering good views of the Helambu valley and glimpses of Jugal Himal and Numbur in the Solukhumbu. Melamchi Gaon is surrounded by beautiful forests and is mainly inhabited by Sherpa people with their unique culture. Along the way, you’ll also come across some Buddhist monasteries.

Stay overnight at a local teahouse in Tharepati.

Leaving the serene village of Melamchi Gaon, our journey today takes us to the charming destination of Kutumsang. The trail unfolds through picturesque landscapes, passing through dense forests filled with rhododendron, oak, and pine trees. As we trek, we may encounter local wildlife, so keep an eye out for birds and other creatures in this natural habitat.

The path gently meanders through Sherpa settlements, allowing us to experience the unique culture and warm hospitality of the local people. Along the way, we might come across traditional houses and Buddhist monasteries, providing glimpses into the rich heritage of the region.

As we approach Kutumsang, the views of the surrounding hills and valleys become increasingly enchanting. This trekking day offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural encounters, and a sense of tranquility as we make our way to the welcoming village of Kutumsang.

Tonight, we’ll rest at a local teahouse in Kutumsang, reflecting on the day’s journey and anticipating the adventures that lie ahead.

After breakfast, we begin our trek to Chisapani, situated at an altitude of 2,215 meters. The journey starts with a two-and-a-half-hour walk, reaching Golphu Bhanjyang (2,130 m). Continuing for about an hour, we reach Thotundada. After another hour, we arrive at Chipling for lunch and a well-deserved rest.

Resuming our trek, it takes approximately an hour to reach Thakaune Bhanjyang. From there, it’s a 45-minute walk to Pati Bhanjyang, followed by an uphill climb for about an hour to finally reach Chisapani.

Tonight, we’ll stay at a local teahouse in Chisapani, surrounded by the peaceful ambiance of the hills.

After an early morning breakfast, we start our trek to Sundarijal. The initial part of the journey involves a 1.5-hour walk to reach Borlang Bhanjyang (2,470 m).
