Gokyo Lake Trek

5 Based on 44 Reviews

The Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri Trek is a magnificent journey to the appealing Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri. The Gokyo Lake Trek is the greatest alternative to the traditional Everest Base Camp Trek.

It offers a breathtaking view of Everest and overnight accommodations in Namche Bazaar, widely known as the Khumbu region’s gateway.

The Gokyo Lake trail is not as busy as the Everest Base Camp trek trail but it rewards the trekkers with an insight into the local lifestyle, breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains, and Course the dazzling turquoise waters of Gokyo Lakes themselves.

Gokyo Lakes are a collection of six bodies of lakes that are located in the Gokyo Valley. These lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system. Due to this reason, they have been assigned as a Ramsar site and are sacred pilgrims to both Hindus and Buddhists.

Gokyo Lake Trek Overview

The Gokyo Lake Trek starts from Lukla town, after taking a short, but interesting flight from Kathmandu. We then follow the Dudh Koshi River towards Namche, passing through the cultural village and serene alpine woodland.

After Namche, we branch off from the main trail towards the sleepy villages of Phortse Thanga, Dole, and Machhermo. The high slope spurs to the north and south, partially shielding the Machhermo settlement from the wind.

From Machhermo the landscape dramatically changes, to broad pastures, narrow clefts, steeply climbing trails, streams to cross, and wastes. Then comes the third lake Dudh Pokhari, which reflects the white face of Cho-Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world.

Ahead we can see our final destination Gokyo Lake trek. From the summit of Gokyo Ri, you can absorb the once-in-a-lifetime view of the Himalayas. It includes Mt.Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,855 m), Mt.Cho-Oyu (8,201 m).

Amadablam (6,812 m), Kangtega (6,782 m), Thamserku (6,623 m), Kwangde (6,011 m), Kusum Kanguru (6,373 m) can also be observed. Likewise, we may observe the Holy peak Khumbi-la (5,761 m), and the 5” highest Mt.Makalu (8,463 m).

From here you can also see the Largest Glacier in Nepal named Ngozumpa. Apart from this, you can also view the tremendous ice ridge between Cho-Oyu and Gyachung Kung (7,922 m). It is one of the most dramatic panoramic views of the Gokyo Lake Trek.

From the Gokyo Ri, the trek continues. It leads into beautiful alpine woodland, to Tengboche Monastery surrounded by mountain peaks, including, Mt.Everest and the majestic Mt.Amadablam. Finally, this memorable trek concludes back at the town of Lukla, with the flight back to Kathmandu.

After enjoying breakfast, we’ll embark on an early morning flight to Lukla, situated at an elevation of 2,860 meters. Lukla is a bustling town with various shops and lodges that cater to trekkers’ needs. This flight marks the beginning of our journey to Everest Base Camp.

As we land, we’ll pass through a gateway adorned with a painted message. The trail predominantly descends, offering stunning views of Kusum Kanguru Peak from the Thulo Khola suspension bridge. The path leads downhill to the Sherpa village of Cheplung and then along the Dudh Koshi River before ascending to the village of Ghat (2,530 m). From Ghat, the trail gently climbs towards Phakding. After an hour’s walk from Ghat, we reach our destination, Phakding.

After an early morning breakfast, we resume our Gokyo Lake Trek team toward Namche Bazaar, often referred to as the Gateway to the Khumbu region. The trail ascends through a picturesque landscape of Rhododendron and blue pine forests along the western banks of the Dudh Koshi River, leading us to the village of Benkar. As we continue, we cross the eastern banks of the Dudh Koshi beside a large rock adorned with Buddhist prayers—an iconic Mani Wall.

Within twenty minutes, we reach Chumao village, then proceed past Monjo and Jorsale, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park, and the permit checkpoint. Enjoy tranquil views of Thamserku (6,618 m) along the trail. Continuing along the riverbed, we reach the confluence of the Bhote and Dudh Koshi Rivers. The path gradually ascends, leading to the famous Tenzing-Hillary suspension bridge, offering breathtaking views of Everest and the Nuptse-Lhotse ridge.

After the challenging ascent from the river to Namche that takes about 3-4 hours, it’s essential to allow our bodies to acclimatize to the elevation of 3,440 meters. Spending an extra night in the village of Namche is recommended for acclimatization. The trail from Namche Bazaar is marked by chortens, and soon, the twin peaks of Thamserku rise in the east. As we continue our Gokyo Lake Trek, we descend to reach Khumbila, marked by a large chorten atop the ridge. Khumbila (5,761 m) is considered the abode of the patron god of the Khumbu region, near the settlement believed to be the birthplace of the lama who introduced Buddhism to the area.

The trek descends from Phortse Thenga along the Dudh Koshi’s bank. Passing through rhododendrons and birch forests, Cho Oyu becomes visible through the blooms before arriving at Dole.

Today marks a significant day in our adventure of Gokyo Lake Trek as we head towards the renowned Gokyo Lakes, home to several stunning high-altitude lakes that also serve as the source of the Dudh Koshi River. The trail provides breathtaking views of the valley below, with Kangtega and Thamserku mountains dominating the scenery. As we ascend, the view of Cho Oyu Mountain becomes increasingly close and majestic. Keep an eye out for Himalayan snow pheasants and other high-altitude birds on the during Gokyo Lake Trek.

Be cautious of icy patches along the trail, and be mindful of the surroundings. The route takes us through Phang, where an avalanche claimed the lives of about 40 people in 1995. Following a trail along a small stream, we will encounter the first of the numerous Gokyo Lakes, followed by the second, and, finally, the main Gokyo Lake. Surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas, this is an ideal spot to spend the night.

Standing atop Gokyo Ri, we are treated to a spectacular view of the Himalayan panorama and the serene Gokyo lakes trek. For those interested, we can also venture to explore the fourth and fifth Gokyo lakes.

The fourth lake, situated about 3 km north of Gokyo, is surrounded by towering cliffs and majestic Himalayan peaks. Continuing a bit further, we reach the fifth lake. Ascending a nearby hill offers us breathtaking views of Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu. This vantage point is aptly named Scoundrel’s Viewpoint. From the northern part of the fifth lake, we catch glimpses of the Cho Oyu base camp and the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in the world. We then make our way back to Gokyo.
